Red light therapy for dogs with IVDD is a non-invasive, drug-free option that may help ease pain, calm inflammation, and support neurological recovery when used alongside veterinary care. The evidence in dogs is genuinely promising in some studies and underwhelming in others, so the most honest way to see it is as supportive care, not a magic fix and not a replacement for your vet.
Here is the one-line version you can hold onto: red light therapy, also called photobiomodulation, uses red and near-infrared light to support the body's own repair processes, and for some dogs with IVDD it may help them feel more comfortable and move more freely sooner.
This is the option we reached for when our French Bulldog, Milka, hurt her back. And I want to walk you through it the way I wish someone had walked me through it: honestly, with the real research, and without the hype.
What is IVDD, and why is it so frightening?
If your dog has an IVDD diagnosis, you already know the fear. One moment they are trotting beside you. The next, they are hunched, shaking, yelping when you lift them, or dragging their back legs.
IVDD, or intervertebral disc disease, is when the cushioning discs between the spine's vertebrae bulge or rupture and press on the spinal cord. It shows up most in breeds like Dachshunds, Corgis, Basset Hounds, and yes, French Bulldogs like Milka.
It is scary. It is heartbreaking. And it sends so many of us searching at 2am for anything that might help our dog hurt less and heal faster. That search is probably what brought you here.
Does red light therapy for dogs with IVDD actually work?
Here is where I have to be straight with you, because most articles on this topic are written by companies selling the device, and they leave out the messy parts.
The truth is that the research is mixed. Some studies show a real, measurable benefit. Others show none. What the better studies suggest is that red light therapy may support neurological recovery and reduce pain in certain dogs, especially as part of a broader rehabilitation plan, but it is not a guarantee.
Let me show you the actual research instead of asking you to take my word for it.

Read that honestly and here is what it tells us. For pain and mobility in arthritic joints, the evidence is fairly encouraging. For IVDD specifically, one study found better neurological scores when deep pain was intact, while another found no clear benefit. Red light therapy is a reasonable supportive tool to consider, not a proven answer on its own.
That honesty matters to me. Your dog deserves real information, not a sales pitch dressed up as science.
How does red light therapy work in the body?
According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, a light-absorbing molecule inside the mitochondria called cytochrome c oxidase takes in red and near-infrared light. This is reported to raise the cell's energy production (ATP) and shift activity toward growth and repair. Merck itself uses careful, hedged wording here, and so will I, because the science is still developing.
In plainer terms: the light gives your dog's cells a nudge of energy to do what they are already trying to do, which is heal. Red light stays fairly shallow. Near-infrared light reaches deeper toward muscle, nerve, and bone, which is why it matters so much for the spine.
One important nuance from the research on how photobiomodulation works: more is not better. Studies show the benefit rises with dose up to a point, then flattens and can even reverse if you overdo it. That is a strong argument for following a set routine rather than blasting the light for as long as possible.
Can a dog recover from IVDD without surgery?
Many dogs can, yes. Depending on severity, vets often start with a conservative, non-surgical IVDD recovery plan built around strict rest, careful movement, pain support, and rehabilitation. Surgery is reserved for more severe cases, and that is a decision only you and your vet can make together based on your dog's specific situation.
Red light therapy fits into the conservative side of that picture as one supportive piece. It is not the whole plan, and it is not a reason to skip veterinary care. It is something that may help the plan along.
How did we use red light therapy with Milka?

- Protect the eyes. Never aim the light into or near your dog's eyes, and use any eye protection the device recommends.
- Avoid shining it directly over known lumps, growths, or masses without your vet's guidance.
- Take extra care with pregnant dogs, or dogs on medication that increases light sensitivity. Ask your vet first.
- Follow the device instructions for distance, timing, and coverage.
None of this is meant to scare you. It is meant to help you use a good tool well.
How often should you use it?
Commonly suggested routines land somewhere around 5 to 20 minutes per area, a few times a week, adjusted for your dog's size and situation. I am giving you a range rather than a rule on purpose, because these numbers come from device makers and rehab practitioners and they vary. Your device instructions and your vet's guidance beat any number I could give you here. And remember the research point from earlier: consistency matters more than cranking up the dose.
What device do you need for a dog's spine?
Not all devices are the same, and for a spinal issue this matters. Look for near-infrared light, generally in the 600 to 1100 nm range, so the light can actually reach past skin and fur toward deeper tissue. A red glow alone does not mean it is doing anything meaningful.
